Kingsgate Resources Inc. Donates Funds for Ghanaian Girls' Education: Dream for Children Restored After The Province Publishes Story

Canadian-based gold mining and exploration company Kingsgate Resources Inc. has donated the requisite funds for a full year's education for 74 girls and has pledged a further five year's funding for 130 young women. The way in which this came about is a bit extraordinary.

On May 25, 2007, the Province published a story about a filmmaker's hopes to help young women in Ghana being dashed by a Vancouver thief. Shannen O'Brian, 25, recently spent 15 months in Ghana, a county in West Africa of 23 million. Six months of her time in Ghana was spent filming and photographing 130 young girls.

Back To School - A Way To Save

It’s that time again. Getting ready for the new school year can be an expensive proposition. Students of all ages are using the latest gadgets to study, write reports, do research, or just have fun. While spending will jump up in all categories for back to school items, electronics will be the catalyst for this year’s economic growth.

Total spending on electronic and computer-related equipment like home computers, laptops, PDAs and calculators is estimated to increase by more than $1.5 billion this year. The average family is likely to spend $527.08 this year, up from $443.77 in 2005 on school supplies. Total spending for back to school items is estimated to reach $17.6 billion, up from $13.4 billion last year, according to the National Retail Federation.

Massachusetts Chamber of Business & Industry Featured in Prominent Business Journal

Debra Boronski, who long served as senior vice president of the Affiliated Chambers of Commerce of Greater Springfield, thought the state of Massachusetts needed more than just local chambers of commerce. Her efforts to form a statewide chamber were a success, leading to the creation of the Massachusetts Chamber of Business & Industry. This newly formed organization was the subject of a recent article in Business West, the business journal for Western Massachusetts.

"Our primary focus will be on state issues, those that affect every business in the Commonwealth we're going to inform, educate, and then advocate on behalf of businesses so we can affect positive change," said Boronski in the article. She believes the creation of the Massachusetts Chamber of Business & Industry was the next logical step for the state. She also believes it was the next logical step for her own professional development; she now serves as president of this organization.

National Holiday Celebrates Relaxation

In April of 2004, relaxation experts at The PajamaGram Company decided to foster stress relief by declaring the day after income taxes are due as National Wear Your Pajamas to Work Day. Since then hundreds of people across the country have traded in their heels, loafers, suits, and skirts to wear slippers, bathrobes, and jammies to work.
