Enterprise Smartphones: Now the Heavy Lifting Begins

Smartphone vendors and channels have been successful in convincing large U.S. and EMEA businesses to begin deploying multifunctional handhelds. Now the challenge is to convert this broad but shallow coverage into deep, pervasive smartphone utilization.

More than three-quarters of U.S. and EMEA enterprise decision makers recently interviewed by InfoTech for its “Driving Enterprise Smartphone Sales” report have begun equipping mobile workers with smartphones. “However, the vast majority of these companies have fewer than one-quarter of their mobile employees using the device,” says Jeanine Sterling, vice president for the “InfoTrack for Enterprise Mobility” (IEM) program. “There’s plenty of room for smartphone growth within these companies. Current customers – rather than new prospects – offer vendors the greater incremental sales opportunity, but now vendors have to get canny on how to make that happen.”

Environmental Working Group Report on Bottled Water Contains Sensationalized Science and Exaggerated Claims, IBWA Says

A report that will be released by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) on Oct. 15, 2008, contains false claims and exaggerations about bottled water products, according to the International Bottled Water Association.

"The testing results show that only two bottled water brands didn't meet a California state standard for one regulated substance," said IBWA President Joe Doss. There are many hundreds of brands sold in the United States that are not involved in this study.

"While bottled water products should always comply with all established regulatory standards, the California requirement for this substance is eight times lower than the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) standard of quality for bottled water and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) maximum contaminant level for tap water," Mr. Doss said.

The report provides results from of a market basket testing program that the EWG conducted on ten brands of bottled water in nine states and the District of Columbia. "This is certainly not a representative sample of bottled water products, which the report acknowledges," he said.

HealthForumOnline Offers New Online CE Course on Working with Transgender Individuals

HealthForumOnline (HFO), a nationally-approved (APA, ASWB, NBCC, PSNA, CA-BBS) online provider of continuing education (CE) for psychologists, social workers, counselors, nurses and other allied healthcare professionals announces the addition of a new online CE course, Health Care Needs and Health-Related Disparities: Building Cultural Competence in Working with Transgender Individuals, to the new LGBT category of their extensive online CE resource library.

The term transgender applies to a range of diverse individuals whose gender identity and/or gender expression is not concordant with the gender they were assigned at birth. Among many associated life challenges, transgender people face multiple social and institutional barriers to competent mental and physical healthcare regardless of whether or not they seek hormonal and/or surgical intervention. In addition, these life challenges and other related factors often contribute to substance abuse and HIV risk behaviors in this group. Thus, transgender individuals frequently find themselves in need of and simultaneously at odds with the healthcare system. "Healthcare providers who work with transgender people often express the desire to treat their patients with competence and respect, but also acknowledge frustration with the lack of information and resources available to inform their practice and expand their awareness of this highly varied population" notes course author Dr. Jae Sevelious.
